Open Door Policy

This political cartoon addresses the Open Door Policy. You can tell because there is an open door leading into China and other nations heading into China. The cartoonist believes that America controlled who traded with China and that America was growing much bigger than other nations. The cartoonist shows this by having America hold the key to China. Also by having America standing in  front of the door, and keeping other nations out. Many people saw this as unfair, and want it to end. This is because many Chinese thought that the other nations were trying to take control of China. Others saw that as a new opportunity to gain more resources, farming land, and natural resources. This cartoonist used the technique of symbolism. They did this by using Uncle Sam and other people to symbolize the nations. The cartoonist also used labeling on the key and the gate of the door. They did this to show what the door was going to and to show what made China open up to the outside world. This cartoon supports my claim that American Imperialism can be good and bad. It is bad because America tried to control China, but it was good because now America had new resources and agriculture.
